At a press conference held on Wednesday, May 8th, 2024, Song Kang Ho shared the story behind his decision to choose Uncle Samsik as his debut drama project.
1. Song Kang Ho’s Drama Debut after 35-Year Career
Song Kang Ho began his career in Korean films in 1996, following seven years of activity on the theater stage. This year, after 35 years of acting in films and theater, he finally steps into the world of Korean drama.
“So, I made my film debut 28 years ago, and I’ve been acting, including my theater career, for 35 years. I’ve performed on stage and in films. And now, after 35 years, I’m making my debut in a drama,” Song Kang Ho explained.
The acclaimed actor noted that he chose Uncle Samsik as his debut television project because he believes dramas on OTT platforms provide an easier way to connect with fans.
“I think it’s crucial to connect with fans and deliver quality work to them. Nowadays, we have various platforms to reach audiences worldwide,” he emphasized.
Additionally, Song Kang Ho found Uncle Samsik intriguing due to its unique elements, from its premise to its presentation, offering audiences something fresh and different.
“I believe Uncle Samsik stands out from typical OTT dramas. It’s something new. It may be risky, but I’m intrigued by the premise it offers,” added the actor, who won the Best Actor award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
2. Acknowledging Nervousness as a Rookie in Korean Dramas
Despite his extensive experience, Song Kang Ho admitted feeling nervous about his drama debut, recognizing it as a new challenge for him.
“This is new territory for me. I’m a bit nervous, but that’s also what makes it exciting—it’s a challenge. So, I have mixed feelings,” he confessed.
Other cast members echoed similar sentiments, expressing their nerves, particularly when acting alongside Song Kang Ho. Byun Yo Han, for instance, mentioned being a fan of Song Kang Ho and eagerly joining Uncle Samsik due to his involvement.
Yoo Jae Myung humorously added, “This is Kang Ho’s first drama, so I want to teach him how to act in a drama,” drawing laughter from the audience.
3. Song Kang Ho’s Perspective on Receiving a Rookie Award in Korean Dramas
During the press conference, Song Kang Ho was referred to as a rookie actor in dramas, prompting questions about how he would feel if he received a rookie award for his role in Uncle Samsik.
“I would be very grateful if I were to receive such an award. However, there are many other deserving actors who also deserve recognition as rookies,” he humbly responded.
Fans can anticipate Song Kang Ho’s debut in a Korean drama when the first five episodes of Uncle Samsik premiere on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024, exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar.
