Netflix Korea premiered its latest series, “Parasyte: The Grey,” on April 5, 2024. The show is a spin-off of the manga “Kiseijuu,” written by Hitoshi Iwaaki from 1988 to 1995. Unlike the manga’s setting in Japan, this drama takes place in South Korea.
“Parasyte: The Grey” keeps audiences on the edge of their seats throughout its six episodes. The parasitic creatures aiming to control human lives claim numerous victims. In this narrative, three characters experience profound loss as the parasites take the lives of those closest to them.
Warning: This article contains spoilers.
1. Jeong Su In
Jeong Su In, portrayed by Jeon So Nee, is the focal point of the story. His body becomes a host to a parasite named Heidi. However, due to Su In’s impending death, Heidi prioritizes healing the host, ultimately failing to consume Su In’s brain.
Su In feels consistently unlucky, especially after becoming something other than human with Heidi’s invasion. The only unwavering support in his life is Detective Kim Chul Min (Kwon Hae Hyo). Unfortunately, Su In fails to protect him from the parasite’s attack, a devastating blow.
2. Seol Kang Woo
Seol Kang Woo (played by Koo Kyo Hwan) faces similar tragedy. He navigates a life of dealing with gangsters until betrayal leads him home, where he discovers his siblings’ deaths at the hands of parasites. His close friend suffers the same fate. Fueled by vengeance, Kang Woo joins Su In and Heidi to eliminate the parasites, especially those seeking power by infiltrating the mayor’s body.
3. Choi Jun Kyung
Choi Jun Kyung (portrayed by Lee Jung Hyun) leads the parasite task force, The Grey. She grapples with the loss of her husband to the parasites, whom she unwittingly turned into a bloodhound. This traumatic experience shadows her duty, driving her to ruthlessly combat parasites threatening human lives. Initially skeptical of Su In and Heidi, Jun Kyung softens upon realizing their uniqueness compared to typical parasites.
These characters share a determination to rid the world of parasites and prevent further losses like those they’ve endured. Fortunately, they succeed in their mission and survive to the end.
