Is Monk Gisune Still Alive In Exhuma?

Gisune is the mastermind behind all the disasters experienced by the characters in the film Exhuma (2024). Even though he is mainly portrayed as a villain, his figure doesn’t even appear in the film at all. In fact, he only briefly appears in a photo belonging to the Park family.

Of course, many viewers are curious about Gisune’s true fate. Some thought he was dead, but quite a few viewers believed that this Japanese monk was still alive. If you are curious, come on, take a look at the following theories.

Attention, this article contains spoilers.

1. The theory that Gisune is still alive

Korean ancestors knew Gisune as a powerful monk who came from Japan. Rumors about Gisune’s true identity as a fox demon spread widely throughout the Korean Peninsula. This is because the energy possessed by the monk is different from that of humans in general.

In Japanese mythology, Gisune is probably taken from the word kitsune, which means ‘fox’. The fox demon is believed to be a manipulative and cunning figure. It also has a long lifespan, possibly even hundreds or thousands of years.

On the other hand, some theories suggest that Gisune has existed since the Battle of Sekigahara in the 1600s. This is supported by confessions from the god of war during a dialogue with Hwa Rim (Kim Go Eun). In fact, Gisune only left the curse on Korean soil around 1900.

This situation supports the theory that Gisune is an intergenerational creature. It’s not surprising that many viewers believe that his figure is still alive today. Could it be that Gisune is secretly monitoring Hwa Rim and her friends’ movements?

2. Another theory believes that Gisune is dead

In the movie Exhuma, Korean ancestors always advised their descendants to avoid supernatural creatures from Japan. They also strictly prohibited young shamans from dealing directly with these figures. There is a strong suspicion that this was due to the great revenge that the Japanese Empire sought in crippling the Korean Peninsula during the war. Hatred has been passed down from generation to generation.

On the other hand, news about the cruelty of Japanese demons has also been widely discussed since ancient times. They are known to not hesitate to kill every human being nearby, even for no apparent reason.

Just like Gisune, he will not remain silent knowing that the god of war, also known as his iron stake, was disturbed. Sang Deuk (Choi Min Sik) and other colleagues have completed the demolition and destruction, but the four of them are still safe until the end of Exhuma. If Gisune doesn’t appear to respond to this action, is it possible that he is really dead?

3. Director of Exhuma hints at potential spin-off

The production team has not officially provided information regarding the continuation of the film Exhuma. Nevertheless, the director, Jang Jae Hyun, conveyed a message in a photo celebrating 6 million viewers of Exhuma in South Korea.

“Exhuma has surpassed 6 million viewers. Thank you to all viewers! I will write the scenario as soon as possible with full enthusiasm!” wrote Jang Jae Hyun.

This message immediately sparked speculation among the audience. Many took this as a hint of a potential spin-off or next season for Exhuma.

There are also many details that could still be explained in more depth if Jang Jae Hyun really decides to make a spin-off of this film, including Gisune’s fate. Gisune’s background might be described clearly, or there could even be a new battle between Gisune and Hwa Rim and her friends.
