The TV show Chief Detective 1958 brings viewers into an escalating conflict in its third week. Park Yeong Han (played by Lee Je Hoon) and his detective team are no longer up against gangster Lee Jung Jae (portrayed by Kim Young Sung). Lee Jung Jae has faced the consequences for his cruel actions.
Now, a new character emerges as the team’s adversary. Baek Do Seok (played by Kim Min Jae) enters the scene and is expected to pose a significant challenge for Park Yeong Han and his colleagues in the latter part of Chief Detective 1958.
Spoiler alert: This article contains plot details.
1. Past Connection with Park Yeong Han
Baek Do Seok arrives as the new Senior Police Officer at Jongnam Police Station, surprising Park Yeong Han. Their history goes back to their teenage years, marked by a strained relationship. During the Korean War, Baek Do Seok led a group of student soldiers, including Park Yeong Han. However, Park Yeong Han was troubled by witnessing atrocities, particularly when Baek Do Seok shot a pregnant woman. Unlike Park Yeong Han, Baek Do Seok felt no remorse for his actions.
2. Military Career Ruined by Lee Jung Jae
Following the Korean War, Baek Do Seok enjoyed a promising military career and was hailed as a war hero. However, his association with Lee Jung Jae led to his downfall. Their illicit activities, involving unauthorized trading with the Armed Forces Command, were exposed by Park Yeong Han and his allies.
3. Ordered to Disable Yu Dae Cheon
Despite his expulsion from the military, Baek Do Seok’s career was salvaged with the help of Choi Dal Sik, a former Senior Police Officer. Choi Dal Sik, anticipating a promotion to Deputy Director of the National Police, used police funds to support Baek Do Seok. In return, Baek Do Seok was tasked with proving his loyalty by injuring Yu Dae Cheon, the Head of Unit 1 of the Jongnam Police. This was to prevent Yu Dae Cheon from revealing Choi Dal Sik’s pro-Japanese past. Baek Do Seok carried out the order, leaving Yu Dae Cheon disabled. Though urged to kill Yu Dae Cheon outright, Baek Do Seok followed Choi Dal Sik’s directive. His presence in the police force complicates matters for Park Yeong Han and his team, adding tension to Chief Detective 1958.
