The Third Finger Offered to a King (王様に捧ぐ薬指), also known as Kissing the Ring Finger, is a Japanese drama that aired in 2023, directed by Toshio Tsuboi and Masahide Izumi. Starring Kanna Hashimoto as Haneda Ayaka and Ryosuke Yamada as Nitta Togo, the series is a captivating blend of romance, comedy, and drama.

The plot revolves around Ayaka, a beautiful but tough wedding planner, and Togo, a powerful hotel executive. Ayaka is notorious for her abrasive personality, often referred to as a “wicked woman” due to her manipulative nature. When Togo, the new executive of the hotel where Ayaka works, proposes a marriage of convenience to ward off romantic pursuers, the two enter into a fake marriage. Despite their mutual dislike, they must convincingly portray a loving couple in public while maintaining their contentious relationship in private.

One of the show’s strengths lies in its character dynamics. The chemistry between Ayaka and Togo is electric, creating a compelling push-and-pull dynamic that keeps viewers hooked. Their interactions are filled with witty banter and tension, which gradually evolves into genuine affection, making their relationship development enjoyable to watch. The supporting characters, although not as prominently featured, add depth and humor to the narrative, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

The drama excels in balancing light-hearted moments with more serious themes. The comedic elements, often stemming from the couple’s awkward attempts to appear in love, are well-executed and provide much-needed levity. However, the show also delves into themes of family, societal expectations, and personal growth, offering a more nuanced and layered story.

Visually, the drama is well-crafted, with beautiful cinematography that captures both the opulence of the hotel setting and the intimate moments between characters. The performances by Hashimoto and Yamada are noteworthy; Hashimoto’s portrayal of Ayaka’s transformation from a manipulative schemer to a more vulnerable and relatable character is particularly impressive. Yamada’s Togo is equally compelling, balancing his stern exterior with moments of genuine warmth and care.

However, the series is not without its flaws. Some viewers have noted that the pacing, particularly in the second half, feels rushed, with certain plot points and character arcs not given enough time to develop fully. Additionally, while the drama’s conclusion is satisfying for some, others might find it too abrupt and lacking in closure for certain subplots.

Despite these minor issues, The Third Finger Offered to a King remains a delightful watch for fans of romantic comedies with a twist. Its engaging storyline, strong performances, and the evolving relationship between the leads make it a standout series in its genre. For those looking for a blend of humor, romance, and drama, this series is definitely worth adding to your watchlist.
