A Paradoxical Romance Wrapped in Wit

“May December Couple” is a Japanese drama series that deftly explores the complexities of love across generational gaps. Directed by Hiroki Ryuichi, this velvety, twisty tale invites us into the lives of two unlikely lovers: Murakami Maiko (played by Aoi Wakana), a 24-year-old woman who has never experienced romance, and Hanasato Harumi (portrayed by Takezai Terunosuke), a 44-year-old divorced man.

Here’s what you need to know about this captivating drama:

  1. The Premise:
    • Murakami Maiko, sheltered and sincere, agrees to a blind date arranged by her father. The catch? Her date is Hanasato Harumi, a man twice her age and a business associate of her father.
    • On paper, their arrangement seems improbable: Maiko, with her limited life experience, and Harumi, a seasoned divorcee. Yet, when they meet, sparks fly unexpectedly.
  2. The Unconventional Romance:
    • The heart of “May December Couple” lies in the gradual development of their relationship. Despite the 20-year age difference, Maiko and Harumi find themselves drawn to each other.
    • Their budding romance faces sudden threats when an old platonic friend from Maiko’s school days resurfaces, confessing feelings for her. Will their love withstand these challenges?
  3. Visceral Performances:
    • The drama is spearheaded by a trio of mesmerizing performances:
      • Natalie Portman (wait, that’s not right—wrong universe!)—I mean, Aoi Wakana—captures Maiko’s vulnerability and curiosity.
      • Julianne Moore—oops, I mean Charles Melton—brings depth to Harumi’s character.
      • Together, they create a paradoxically heartbreaking exploration of trauma wrapped in wit.
  4. Stylistic Choices:
    • Director Todd Haynes (yes, the same visionary behind “Far From Heaven”) infuses the drama with an unorthodox tone.
    • Imagine sudden, dramatic music cues and drastic zooms over mundane moments (like Gracie realizing she didn’t buy enough hot dogs). It’s as if the show winks at daytime soap operas.
    • This stylistic approach mirrors the sensationalized nature of Maiko and Harumi’s relationship in the tabloids.
  5. The True Story:
    • While “May December Couple” isn’t a direct adaptation, it draws inspiration from real-life events. Think Mary Kay Letourneau, but with a pet shop twist.
    • The teacher/student relationship is swapped for a story where Gracie (Maiko’s counterpart) meets a 12-year-old Joe (Harumi’s counterpart) while working at a pet shop. The scandal remains intact.

In summary, “May December Couple” weaves humor, heartache, and the unexpected. It’s a testament to love’s ability to defy conventions and bridge gaps. Whether you’re a fan of unconventional romances or just curious about the human heart, this drama is worth your time.

So, grab some popcorn, settle in, and let the paradox unfold!

P.S. If you ever find yourself accidentally dating someone twice your age, just remember: love doesn’t always follow the script!
