Editor's Review
Love Destiny is a 2018 Thai television series that originally aired on Channel 3. The 15-episode drama combines elements of romance, comedy, and time travel. Starring Ranee Campen and Thanawat Wattanaputi, it became a major hit in Thailand and gained popularity across Asia. The success of Love Destiny can be attributed to its elaborate screenplay, costumes, and captivating locations.
Plot Summary: The story unfolds during the reign of King Narai (1656–1688) in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Ketsurang (Ranee Campen), a history student, and her friend Rueangrit (Prama Imanothai) experience a car accident while returning from a school excavation trip in Ayutthaya. Ketsurang wakes up in the body of Karaket, the daughter of the ruler of Phitsanulok, living in Ayutthaya. She resides with Phraya Horathibodi, the chief astrologer and father of her fiancé, Det (Thanawat Wattanaputi), a foreign ministry official. Ketsurang’s modern behavior shocks everyone, but her kindness gradually wins their hearts. Her knowledge of historical events challenges conventional wisdom, leading to intriguing interactions and revelations.
What Makes It Great:
- Phenomenal Acting: The chemistry between NiNi and Chang Chen (similar to Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms and The Pillow Book) is incredible. Their portrayal of three different characters across “three lives” is convincing and emotionally engaging. The entire cast contributes to the immersive experience.
- Surprising Humor: Amidst the drama’s heavy moments, there are plenty of well-written humorous scenes. The actors’ comedic timing adds a delightful touch.
- Well-Constructed Plot: Although not based on a novel, the plot flows seamlessly. Side characters have their own stories without overshadowing the main leads. Character decisions make sense, and misunderstandings are handled effectively.
- Visual Beauty: The CGI, sets, costumes, and fight scenes are visually appealing. Despite some questionable hairstyles, Chang Chen’s acting compensates for any initial reservations.
- Historical Context: The drama weaves historical events, including the Ayutthayan embassy in the court of King Louis XIV of France and the xenophobic coup orchestrated by Phra Phet Racha. The execution of Phaulkon, the Prime Counsellor of Ayutthaya, adds depth to the storyline.
In Conclusion: Love Destiny offers a captivating blend of romance, history, and fantasy. Its unique premise, strong performances, and attention to detail make it a must-watch for fans of xianxia/wuxia dramas. If you’re looking for a beautifully crafted series that transcends time, this one won’t disappoint.
