“Love at First Taste” (爱在唇齿间) is a captivating Chinese web drama that aired in January 2022 on Tencent. This 26-episode series skillfully intertwines romance, fantasy, and light comedy. The story revolves around Tong Xiaoman, an aspiring actress who learns she has terminal cancer with only three months to live. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Ou Ze Ye, a man from another planet. As they begin living together, Tong Xiaoman discovers that Ou Ze Ye endures a curse that transforms him into a bloodthirsty creature every full moon.

Characters and Performances: The drama features Zhang Fei Fei as the enigmatic Ou Ze Ye and Pan Yue Tong as the determined Tong Xiaoman. Their performances create a compelling chemistry that draws viewers into their unusual love story. Zhang Fei Fei portrays Ou Ze Ye with a blend of charm and mystery, while Pan Yue Tong effectively conveys the emotional turmoil of a terminally ill young woman finding unexpected love. Despite initial reservations about their acting, both actors grow into their roles, delivering heartfelt performances that resonate with the audience.

Plot and Structure: The series’ plot is a unique blend of romance and fantasy. The storyline’s fantastical elements, such as Ou Ze Ye’s supernatural abilities and his lunar curse, add an intriguing twist to the conventional romance narrative. However, the series’ structure, with each episode lasting only three to four minutes, can feel rushed. The brevity of the episodes sometimes hinders the development of the plot and characters, leaving viewers wanting more. Extending the series to longer episodes or fewer but more substantial episodes might have allowed for a more fluid and effective storytelling experience.

Visuals and Production: “Love at First Taste” benefits from high production values, with well-designed sets and costumes that enhance the viewing experience. The visual effects used to depict Ou Ze Ye’s supernatural abilities are impressive, adding a layer of believability to the fantasy elements. The drama’s cinematography effectively captures both the intimate moments and the fantastical sequences, creating a visually appealing show.

Themes and Impact: At its core, “Love at First Taste” explores themes of love, mortality, and the supernatural. The series delves into the idea of finding love in the most unexpected places and times, emphasizing the preciousness of life and relationships. The romantic storyline between an alien prince and a terminally ill woman is both heartwarming and tragic, offering a fresh perspective on the genre. Despite some flaws in its execution, the drama succeeds in creating an emotionally engaging narrative that resonates with viewers.

Conclusion: “Love at First Taste” is a delightful yet poignant drama that combines romance and fantasy in a unique way. While the short episode format can be limiting, the strong performances by Zhang Fei Fei and Pan Yue Tong, along with the intriguing storyline, make it a series worth watching. Fans of unconventional romance and fantasy dramas will find “Love at First Taste” a refreshing addition to the genre.

In summary, “Love at First Taste” offers a heartwarming and visually appealing experience, despite its structural limitations. Its exploration of love and mortality, coupled with strong performances and high production values, make it a memorable watch.
