Light on Me (새빛남고 학생회) is a South Korean BL (Boys’ Love) drama that has garnered attention for its heartfelt storytelling and representation. Released in 2021, this series is a refreshing addition to the genre, offering a blend of romance, friendship, and self-discovery.

The story revolves around Woo Tae Kyung (played by Lee Sae On), an 18-year-old high school student who has always been a loner. Encouraged by his teacher to join the student council, Tae Kyung reluctantly agrees, hoping to make friends and change his solitary lifestyle. In the student council, he meets Noh Shin Woo (Kang Yoo Seok), the vice president, and Shin Da On (Choi Chan Yi), the president. The dynamics between these characters form the crux of the series, leading to a love triangle that is both engaging and emotionally charged.

One of the standout aspects of Light on Me is its representation. As one of the few full-length BL dramas from South Korea, it breaks away from the traditional romance narratives often seen in K-dramas. The series does an excellent job of portraying the struggles and joys of young love, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. This representation is crucial, as it provides visibility and relatability for viewers who may not see themselves in mainstream media.

The characters are well-developed, each with their own distinct personalities and backstories. Woo Tae Kyung’s journey from a lonely teenager to someone who finds friendship and love is heartwarming. Noh Shin Woo, with his initially cold demeanor, gradually reveals his vulnerabilities, making him a compelling character. Shin Da On, the charming and kind-hearted president, adds complexity to the love triangle, making viewers root for all three characters at different points in the series.

The acting in Light on Me is commendable, especially considering the relatively young and inexperienced cast. Lee Sae On, Kang Yoo Seok, and Choi Chan Yi deliver performances that are both sincere and impactful. Their chemistry is palpable, which is essential for a romance drama. The supporting cast also does a great job, adding depth and humor to the story.

Visually, the series is pleasing, with well-chosen locations and cinematography that enhances the storytelling. However, it is evident that the production had a limited budget. The settings are somewhat repetitive, and there are moments where the lack of variety in scenes is noticeable. Despite this, the series manages to maintain a charming and engaging atmosphere.

The plot, while not groundbreaking, is executed well. It follows familiar tropes of high school romance and love triangles but does so with a sincerity that makes it enjoyable. The pacing is just right, allowing for character development and emotional moments without dragging.

In conclusion, Light on Me is a delightful addition to the BL genre. It offers a heartfelt story with relatable characters and important representation. While it has its flaws, such as a limited budget and predictable plot points, the series’ strengths far outweigh these issues. For fans of BL dramas or those looking for a sweet and sincere romance, Light on Me is definitely worth watching.
