Editor's Review
“Lie to Love” (良言写意) is a 2021 Chinese drama that blends romance, mystery, and business intrigue. Adapted from Mu Fu Sheng’s novel and directed by Chen Chang, the series stars Luo Yun Xi as Li Ze Liang and Cheng Xiao as Su Xie Yi. The drama has received mixed reviews, highlighting both its strengths and weaknesses.
Plot Overview
The story follows Su Xie Yi, who experiences a significant tragedy with the suspicious death of her father. This event leads to her temporary amnesia and the loss of her family business. She crosses paths again with her former lover, Li Ze Liang, who is dealing with his own family issues. Together, they seek to uncover the truth behind their respective family downfalls while rediscovering their love for each other. The plot is filled with themes of revenge, betrayal, and romance, with numerous twists and turns keeping the narrative engaging.
Strengths
1. Unique Story Elements: The drama stands out with its positive portrayal of a character with a physical disability, which is rarely seen in Chinese dramas. This adds a unique and commendable layer of depth to the narrative.
2. Engaging Business Drama: The corporate warfare and strategic maneuvers depicted in the series are particularly engaging in the initial episodes. These elements provide a solid backdrop to the romantic and suspenseful aspects of the show.
3. Strong Performances: Cheng Xiao and Luo Yun Xi deliver commendable performances, bringing their characters to life with a mix of vulnerability and strength. The chemistry between the leads, though not electrifying, is convincing and grows as the series progresses.
Weaknesses
1. Inconsistent Plot: The initial episodes promise a gripping tale with high stakes and intense drama. However, the story’s momentum falters towards the middle, with some viewers noting that the resolution feels drawn out and less compelling. The introduction of multiple villains and convoluted plot twists can sometimes detract from the overall narrative coherence.
2. Character Development: While Su Xie Yi starts strong, her development into a more formidable figure is inconsistent. The anticipated transformation into a more empowered persona falls short, leading to some disappointment among viewers expecting a more dynamic lead.
3. Secondary Characters: The handling of secondary characters and side plots could have been more robust. Potential side romances and deeper backstories for supporting characters are hinted at but not fully explored, leaving some narrative threads feeling unfinished and underdeveloped.
Overall Impression
“Lie to Love” is a multifaceted drama that skillfully blends romance with elements of mystery and corporate intrigue. While it stumbles in maintaining narrative consistency, its unique aspects, such as the representation of disability and initial plot excitement, make it a worthwhile watch for fans of the genre. It’s a series that starts with a bang, offering a riveting storyline that tapers off but still provides enough drama and romance to keep viewers engaged till the end.
For those seeking a blend of sweet romance, business strategy, and a touch of mystery, “Lie to Love” delivers a solid, if imperfect, experience.
