A Hong Kong Take on Startup Culture

“In Geek We Trust” (IT狗) is a unique Hong Kong series that takes a satirical jab at the cutthroat startup world. Directed by Lawrence Kan, the show introduces us to Shun, an I.T. expert who faces a double blow: losing his cushy bank job and his girlfriend. As he navigates the chaotic entrepreneurial landscape, the series unfolds into an inspiring story about teamwork and resilience.

The Silicon Valley Influence

“In Geek We Trust” is heavily influenced by the American TV comedy series “Silicon Valley.” Many scenes are reminiscent of the tech-savvy humor and absurd situations that Silicon Valley portrayed. While the creators attempted to infuse local Hong Kong elements, the show falls short of surpassing its American counterpart. The borrowed plotlines and character dynamics echo the familiar Silicon Valley vibe, but they lack the originality needed to stand out.

Shun’s Journey: From Setbacks to Triumphs

Shun, portrayed by Ling Man-Lung, embodies the quintessential underdog. Fired from his IT job and heartbroken, he clings to his entrepreneurial dream. His journey at Born Hub—a co-working space for ambitious entrepreneurs—becomes a rollercoaster ride of successes and failures. As Shun grapples with challenges, the show emphasizes the power of teamwork. It’s not just about individual brilliance; it’s about collaboration, determination, and overcoming obstacles together.

The Motivating Power of Teamwork

“In Geek We Trust” gradually sheds its satire and reveals a heartwarming core. Shun’s interactions with fellow entrepreneurs—Kaki Sham, Lokman Yeung, and Hanna Chan—highlight the importance of collective effort. Born Hub becomes more than just a workspace; it’s a community where dreams are nurtured. The camaraderie among the characters transcends cultural boundaries, emphasizing that innovation knows no borders.

Hong Kong Flavor and Global Themes

While the show leans on Silicon Valley’s blueprint, it does inject some Hong Kong flavor. The bustling cityscape, the fusion of Eastern and Western influences, and the entrepreneurial spirit unique to Hong Kong add authenticity. Yet, the series doesn’t limit itself to local themes. It tackles universal topics—ambition, resilience, and the pursuit of dreams—that resonate with viewers worldwide.

Final Verdict

“In Geek We Trust” balances humor, drama, and inspiration. It’s a reminder that setbacks don’t define us; our response to them does. As Shun and his fellow geeks navigate the startup maze, we witness their growth, setbacks, and eventual triumphs. While it may not surpass Silicon Valley, it carves its own niche—a testament to the indomitable human spirit.
