A Mystery Thriller with Untapped Potential

“Home School” promised viewers a gripping mystery thriller set within the confines of an enigmatic boarding school. The show revolves around a big investigation into the peculiar institution known as “home school,” its absurd curriculum, strict rules, and the mysterious disappearance of a previous student. While the series initially held promise, it ultimately fell short due to several critical flaws.

What Worked:

  1. Character Depth: At the outset, the audience is given glimpses into the students’ lives outside the school. We witness their treatment at home, which informs their behavior within the institution. Phleng’s constant lying, Pennueng’s fear of confinement, and the nuanced performances by Jane, Chimon, and Gun add depth to the characters.
  2. Grey/Flawed Characters: Jingjai, Hugo, and Fuji, raised in oppressive environments, exhibit selfish behavior stemming from their upbringing. Despite their infuriating actions, their relatability makes them intriguing.

What Didn’t Work:

  1. Plot Execution: The central premise—a deep investigation into the mystery of “home school”—remains largely unexplored. Characters are aware of the institution’s creepy behavior, yet the plot veers off course. Instead of unraveling the mystery, most episodes focus on mundane activities like taking exams. The answers they seek are painfully obvious, leaving viewers cringing.
  2. Romantic Subplots: Just when intrigue should have intensified, the show inexplicably shifts its focus to romantic entanglements among the characters. Given the series’ 18-episode length, this diversion feels uncalled for. A tighter narrative, with fewer distractions, would have served the original plot better.

In summary, “Home School” had significant potential but failed to capitalize on it. The mystery remained largely unexplored, and the excessive emphasis on romance detracted from the core storyline. With better pacing and a more focused approach, the show could have been a compelling thriller.
