HIStory4: Close to You is a Taiwanese drama that aired from March 14 to May 16, 2021. It’s part of the popular HIStory series, known for its LGBTQ+ themes and romantic storylines. Let’s dive into the details.

The show revolves around two main couples:

  1. Xiao Li Cheng (played by An Jun Peng) and Teng Mu Ren (played by Charles Tu):
    • Xiao Li Cheng manages the sales division of a prestigious wedding planning company. He’s confident and skilled in closing deals.
    • Teng Mu Ren, his co-worker, becomes his “date” to catch the attention of Liu Mei Fang, whom Li Cheng has secretly admired since childhood.
    • Their innocent act of pretending to be a couple gradually evolves into something deeper.
    • Review: Their chemistry is sizzling hot, and their struggle with same-gender love amidst social obligations is portrayed well. However, some viewers found the subplot involving dubious consent problematic.
  2. Ye Xing Si (played by Tiger Wang) and Fu Yong Jie (played by Lin Chia Wei):
    • Ye Xing Si, the company’s creative director, unexpectedly finds himself in a relationship with his two-faced step-brother, Fu Yong Jie.
    • Yong Jie, a medical student, has an inexplicable obsession with Xing Si.
    • Their contrasting personalities create a tangled web of emotions.
    • Review: While their story has some unrealistic elements, it ultimately resolves positively, leaving the toxic aspects behind.

What Works:

  • The drama maintains the high standard set by previous HIStory seasons, even though some consider it the weakest.
  • The cast is good-looking, and the heartwarming storyline resonates with viewers.
  • The tension between the couples feels authentic, and the struggles they face are relatable.

What Could Be Improved:

  • Some viewers expressed discomfort with the portrayal of dubious consent in one of the relationships.
  • The stepbrother trope, while common in BL dramas, can be tiresome for some audiences.

In summary, HIStory4: Close to You offers warmth, romance, and a fresh take on familiar themes. If you’re a fan of BL dramas, it’s worth a watch. Just be aware of the sensitive content and decide if it aligns with your preferences.
