Editor's Review
“Hikaru no Go” is a delightful adaptation of the manga by Yumi Hotta and Takeshi Obata. The story revolves around Shi Guang, a sixth-year primary school student who stumbles upon an old Go board in his grandfather’s house. Little does he know that touching the board will lead to a life-changing encounter with the spirit of Chu Ying, a Go master from the Southern Dynasty.
1. Story: The plot is brilliant and engaging. As Shi Guang develops a passion for Go under Chu Ying’s influence, we witness his journey from an ordinary student to a dedicated player. The drama beautifully captures the essence of the game, its strategies, and the emotional highs and lows faced by the characters. It’s a heartwarming tale of growth, friendship, and determination.
2. Acting/Cast: Despite featuring mostly new faces, the cast delivers splendid performances. Hu Xian Xu as Shi Guang and Zhang Chao as Chu Ying stand out, portraying their characters with depth and authenticity. Even minor characters leave a lasting impression. Director Liu Chang’s cameo as Lazy Monk adds a pleasant surprise.
3. Bromance and Friendship: The best aspect of “Hikaru no Go” is its bromance and friendship. The camaraderie between friends motivates and supports each other, pulling them out of their darkest moments. It’s heartwarming to see their bonds strengthen as they chase their dreams and face challenges together.
In summary, “Hikaru no Go” (2020) defies the typical pitfalls of live-action adaptations. It’s a gem that surprises, entertains, and leaves a positive impact. Whether you’re a Go enthusiast or simply appreciate well-crafted dramas, this one is worth watching!
