“Guess Who I Am,” the 2024 Chinese drama, is a refreshing take on the romantic comedy genre, blending in elements of thriller and supernatural to create a unique viewing experience. The series, directed by Zhong Qing and penned by Xu Meng, features Zhang Yu Xi and Wang Zi Qi as the quirky leads who embark on a journey filled with deception, romance, and a quest for truth.

The narrative follows Song Yao, played by Zhang Yu Xi, a woman with a peculiar talent for captivating wealthy men with a mere gaze. She, along with her friends, forms the Justice Committee, which aims to punish corrupt rich individuals. Their path crosses with Ji Cheng Chuan, portrayed by Wang Zi Qi, who is an impostor named Qin Hao seeking to unravel the mystery behind a tragic fire that killed his parents.

The drama stands out for its self-awareness, acknowledging and even mocking the clichés it employs, which adds a layer of charm to the storytelling. The chemistry between the leads is palpable, and the supporting cast delivers commendable performances that add depth to the plot. The pacing is well-measured, ensuring that the story progresses without dragging, and the absence of unnecessary misunderstandings is a welcome change from typical rom-com tropes.

One of the highlights of “Guess Who I Am” is its soundtrack, which features a mix of seductive and steamy songs that complement the show’s tone. The OST includes tracks like “Mind Reader” by Momo Wu and “Game of Guessing Stars” by Meng Huiyan, which enhance the emotional impact of the scenes.

Despite employing overused tropes like childhood connections, male lead trauma, and even a contract marriage, the series manages to keep things fresh with flirty banter, comforting bonding between the leads, and a strong sense of friendship and teamwork. The love triangle introduced adds a comedic element rather than drama, making it enjoyable rather than frustrating.

The series also cleverly navigates censorship by framing the supernatural elements as part of a novel written by the female lead, with the real-life counterparts meeting in a different context towards the end. This approach allows the show to maintain its supernatural premise while adhering to broadcasting regulations.

In conclusion, “Guess Who I Am” is a delightful rom-com that offers a blend of humor, romance, and a light thriller vibe. It’s a perfect binge-watch for those in the mood for a clichéd romantic comedy executed in a somewhat better way. The series is self-aware, entertaining, and provides a satisfying ending, making it a worthwhile addition to the genre.
