Editor's Review
In ancient times, the world was thrown into chaos by the demon Jiu Ying. To stop this menace, the five deity lords—Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth—combined their powers to seal Jiu Ying, but in doing so, they sacrificed themselves. Their spirits scattered into the mortal realm, disappearing for thousands of years.
Fast forward to the present day, where the You Kingdom, established by the Baili family, is in constant conflict with the Wolf Tribe. After the Emperor and Crown Prince pass away, young Emperor Baili Hao He ascends the throne. However, his maternal clan takes advantage of his youth and slowly seizes power in the Imperial Court. Meanwhile, the two sons of the deceased Crown Prince, Baili Hong Xuan and Baili Hong Shuo, face suspicion and suppression despite their loyalty to the throne.
As the new leader of the Wolf Tribe, Ming Ye Feng discovers the true identity of Baili Hong Yi, the daughter of the Prince of Pingyuan. This revelation plunges the Baili family into a deep abyss. Simultaneously, Jiu Ying begins to break out of its seal, awakening the deities one by one. Rediscovering their elemental powers, the five deities gather once again to fulfill their thousand-year-old promise: to protect the world and ensure its peace.
My Thoughts:
The drama starts promisingly, with a well-contrasted portrayal of the machinations within the Yo Imperial Court and the serenity of the Baili household. The cinematography, with its dim and gritty color palette, adds to the realism and historical authenticity. Leo Wu and Zhang Lingxin’s performances are commendable, drawing viewers in during the initial episodes.
However, as the series progresses, it falters. The screenplay quality declines, especially in the dialogue, and the pacing becomes agonizingly slow. Characters talk in circles without getting to the main point, and the generic storyline struggles to maintain interest. Despite its potential, “Guardians of the Ancient Oath” fails to live up to expectations, leaving viewers wanting more.
In summary, while the drama has its moments, it ultimately falls short due to its sluggish narrative and lackluster pacing. If you’re a fan of historical fantasy, you might still find some enjoyment in the action sequences and elemental powers, but be prepared for a slow burn.
