Synopsis

No matter how bad things got, Xiao Xiao took comfort in knowing that food would always be there to comfort her. There’s just one problem with loving food. When you live in a world where being slim is hailed as the ultimate standard of beauty, an intense passion for food feels a bit like a curse. Which is why, on more than one occasion, Xiao Xiao has wished she could have lived during the time of the Tang Dynasty, where plump women were considered to be the epitome of beauty. Tired of being harassed about her size, Xiao Xiao wishes with all her heart that she could transport back in time. Little does she know, her wishes are about to come true! After passing out in the modern world, Xiao Xiao finds herself possessing the body of Yuan Wan Er, a painfully thin Tang Dynasty girl whose frail form has kept away all the potential suitors away.

Gourmet in Tang Dynasty tackles an interesting theme: the appreciation of food and acceptance of different body sizes. Set against the backdrop of historical China, this drama explores the clash between modern ideals and ancient beauty standards. Xiao Xiao, a food blogger in her previous life, now inhabits the frail form of Yuan Wan Er. During the Tang Dynasty, plump women were considered beautiful, which is a refreshing twist compared to contemporary standards.

The drama strikes a balance between silliness and entertainment. The absurd premise of Xiao Xiao’s time-traveling experience adds humor, and Li Zi Xuan’s portrayal of the lead character injects energy into the show. The chemistry between the quirky female lead and the stoic male lead, Bai Yi Ming, keeps viewers engaged. Plus, the scenes featuring delicious-looking food preparation are a treat for the eyes.

One standout aspect is the subplot involving Xiao Xiao’s relationship with her sister, who is overweight. Unlike other productions that include stocky characters for the sake of political correctness, Gourmet in Tang Dynasty presents a well-rounded character in the sister. Their bond is beautifully scripted and acted, adding depth to the drama.

While the drama doesn’t shy away from anachronisms, it remains honest about the historical period’s beauty standards. It’s a guilty pleasure that combines humor, romance, and mouthwatering dishes. If you’re looking for something light-hearted with a unique twist, give Gourmet in Tang Dynasty a try

In summary, Gourmet in Tang Dynasty offers a delightful blend of comedy, romance, and food appreciation. Xiao Xiao’s journey through time provides laughs and heartwarming moments, making this drama a satisfying watch for those seeking a lighthearted escape. Bon appétit!

Note: The drama has 27 episodes and is available on platforms such as Viki and TencentVideo.
