A Controversial Reality Show
Girls Planet 999, a reality show that brought together aspiring female idols from China, South Korea, and Japan, stirred the hearts of K-pop fans during its five-month run in 2021. Organized by Mnet, the program aimed to create a global girl group with only nine members. However, beneath the glitz and glamour, the show faced criticism for its xenophobia and voting manipulation.
Xenophobia and Manipulation: A Dark Undercurrent
At first, Girls Planet 999 seemed promising. The unique premise of dividing contestants into cells—each containing one Korean, one Japanese, and one Chinese girl—added an intriguing twist. Watching these girls collaborate despite their cultural differences was initially captivating. However, as the episodes progressed, a troubling pattern emerged.
The show perpetuated xenophobic stereotypes. In each group, the Japanese member was often sidelined, the Chinese girl portrayed negatively, and the Korean girl hailed as exceptional. This recurring storyline became predictable and frustrating. It wasn’t an isolated incident; it happened consistently, leaving viewers questioning the show’s intentions.
Moreover, voting manipulation loomed large. While the show may not have directly manipulated votes (as seen in the infamous Produce series), indirect manipulation was rampant. Consider this scenario: an unfamiliar Japanese girl, a disliked Chinese contestant, and a Korean girl who performed flawlessly. Who would viewers vote for? The bias was evident, exacerbated by unequal screen time. Scenes, praises, and moments overwhelmingly favored the Korean contestants.
The final votes were split 50% Korea and 50% the rest of the world—an imbalance that raised eyebrows. The show pushed boundaries, and its audacity offended many. The mentors, despite their titles, remained largely ineffective, except for the dance instructors. Their impact was minimal, and their presence often felt unnecessary.
In Conclusion
Girls Planet 999 had potential but fell short due to its xenophobia and questionable practices. While the performances showcased talent, the underlying issues tainted the experience. As fans, we hope future reality shows learn from these mistakes and create a fairer platform for aspiring idols worldwide.
