Fragrance of the First Flower is a deeply moving and poetic story that truly makes you feel vulnerable. The production is meticulously done, paying attention to spectacular details and character development. Set in an East-Asian cultural context, the delicate chemistry between the two women is extremely well-portrayed.

The show’s strength lies in its gorgeous cinematography, particularly the thoughtful use of color grading. Each shot serves a purpose while remaining aesthetically pleasing. The colors effectively dictate the mood and feel of each scene, enhancing the emotional impact of the story.

Despite its brevity—consisting of only six episodes, each around 18 minutes long—The Fragrance of the First Flower manages to convey a powerful narrative. The central theme revolves around the right person at the wrong time. The two protagonists grapple with their feelings, caught in a web of societal expectations and personal struggles.

The lead actresses, although perhaps appearing older than their teenage selves, deliver commendable performances. Their chemistry, while subtle, draws viewers into their relationship. Notably, the scene where they almost kiss for the first time, only to be interrupted by a pervert, leaves a lasting impression. It subtly addresses how lesbians are often viewed through the male gaze, highlighting the challenges young queer women face in finding themselves.

Additionally, the moment when Yi Min confesses to her husband that she has fallen for someone else is particularly poignant. Despite having everything she wanted—a house, family, and the role of a wife—she grapples with inner conflict. The show beautifully captures the complexities of love, desire, and societal norms.

In summary, Fragrance of the First Flower may be short, but it packs an emotional punch. Its portrayal of love, lust, and self-discovery resonates deeply, leaving viewers with a bittersweet longing for more. If only there were more episodes to explore this captivating story further .
