Editor's Review
“Forever and Ever,” adapted from the novel “One Life, One Incarnation – Beautiful Bones” by Mo Bao Fei Bao, is a 2021 Chinese drama directed by Shen Yang and Ben Fang. It serves as the official sequel to “One and Only” and premiered two weeks after the first season concluded.
Synopsis: The whimsical twists of fate bring together Shi Yi (played by Bai Lu), a voice actress, and Zhou Sheng Chen (played by Ren Jia Lun), a refined chemistry professor. Their paths cross unexpectedly at an airport, leaving a lasting impression on both. Zhou Sheng Chen, facing family pressure due to raw material issues in their teapot factory, agrees to an arranged marriage to save the family business. However, he refuses to let his family choose his wife. Unable to forget the woman he met at the airport, Zhou Sheng Chen proposes an unexpected marriage to Shi Yi. She accepts, and together they work to rescue the family business. But life throws significant obstacles their way, and destiny isn’t always on their side. Will this destined couple find the strength to overcome what lies ahead?
My Thoughts: “Forever and Ever” is the sequel to “One and Only,” which unfortunately had an ending that didn’t quite satisfy me. However, in this installment, the main couple gets their well-deserved happy ending. The drama could have been more enjoyable if it were shorter, as the plot tends to drag with many loose ends. Despite this, the love story between Shi Yi and Zhou Sheng Chen is ethereal and heart-rending.
The lead actors were stronger in the first drama. Zhou Sheng Chen’s rigid, emotionless demeanor irritated me throughout this sequel. Bai Lu, portraying Shi Yi, carried the weight of the protagonist alone. Shi Yi is decisive and straightforward, unshaken by challenges. My only qualm with her was the blind trust she placed in Zhou Sheng Chen from the start—never questioning his intentions. Moreover, the drama’s portrayal of physical affection felt outdated. In the 21st century, holding hands, kissing, or hugging should not be treated as crimes! The couple gets engaged without even sharing a kiss, and episodes later, they struggle to embrace. It feels tepid and awkward.
The drama’s main flaw lies in its lack of engaging subplots and complex secondary characters. Beyond Shi Yi and Zhou Sheng Chen, other characters appear sporadically and disjointedly, serving only to advance the central romance.
In summary, “Forever and Ever” delivers a bittersweet love story but falls short in terms of plot development and supporting characters. If you’re a fan of romance and don’t mind a slow-paced narrative, give it a watch.
