A Journey of Brotherhood and War

Rating: 8.5/10

Farewell to Arms” is an underrated war drama that takes place during the Japanese occupation in 1937. The story revolves around Zhang Han Shi (Zhang Song Ling), a simple man born into a family of scholars. While the leads may not be as famous, the drama offers a captivating narrative with strong secondary roles.

The drama kicks off with a fast-paced storyline, emphasizing brotherhood and camaraderie. Zhang Han Shi, the male lead, suffers significant losses in the first half of the drama. He loses people close to him as he fights against the Japanese occupation. However, the second half shifts to a somewhat happier tone, showcasing the resilience of the human spirit even amidst war.

One of the highlights is the genuine bromance between Zhang Han Shi and his childhood friend Peng Xue Wen. Their bond transcends mere friendship; they become brothers in arms, supporting each other through thick and thin. The drama portrays men not just as warriors but as brothers who love and care for one another.

The female lead, introduced later in the series, is adorable and naive. Zhang Han Shi initially treats her like a younger sister, but their relationship evolves over time. As the drama progresses, viewers witness growth, sacrifice, and the pursuit of justice.

Despite the lack of widespread recognition, “Farewell to Arms” delivers a powerful message about resilience, sacrifice, and the bonds that form during times of adversity. The war backdrop adds tension, while moments of happiness provide relief. The drama’s pacing keeps viewers engaged, shifting from one front to another as Zhang Han Shi fights against the Japanese and seeks revenge.

In summary, “Farewell to Arms” is a hidden gem that deserves more attention. If you appreciate war dramas with authentic character relationships, this one is worth watching.
