Synopsis
45-year-old Hiro Kamon works as a librarian because she loves books. Although she is worshiped as the "aloof beauty" and "ideal female" for her beautiful, gentle smile and amiability, she actually dislikes people. Hiro has been hurt countless times, and Chōji, the only guy she loved wholeheartedly in university, also fled in one night. She has become a person who no longer believes in love and has decided to live alone for life. But she ends up acting as a "fake married couple" with Chōji, whom she happens to meet again, for the sake of his mother, Teruno, who has been given a short time to live.

Editor's Review
In Fake Couple, a gay man asks his ex of 25 years for a contract marriage to appease his dying mother. She agrees, and hijinks ensue. Along the way, we learn the true meaning of family. While the plot may seem average, what’s impressive here is that the gay aspect is just one part of what makes this story special, rather than its defining aspect. The drama explores not only family dynamics but also the process of coming out, not only for the gay man but also for his fake wife, who has emotionally walled herself off from the world.
Cast and Performances: The lighthearted tone of the show works well. As expected, Amami Yuki and Sawamura Ikki deliver amazing performances. Amami portrays the cold, people-hating librarian, while Sawamura plays the warmhearted nursery school teacher. Their banter provides plenty of comedic relief. Uchida Yuki and Kudo Asuka also shine as a lesbian single mother and an “ally of justice” deliveryman, respectively, adding depth to the drama’s more serious moments.
Themes and Message: Fake Couple treats homosexuality as something normal, refreshing viewers with its approach. It doesn’t shy away from painful topics like discrimination, domestic abuse, and the fear of coming out. The show’s message seems to be: “There are many different kinds of people, with different types of love that bind them together. But you can’t say that any one kind (gay, straight, romantic, platonic, familial, friendship) is worse than any other.”
Overall Impression: While the ending may be disorienting, it’s not a sell-out. Instead, it prompts viewers to reexamine their own preconceptions about what truly matters. The leads’ banter is memorable, making this drama a heartwarming ride with a strong message.
In summary, Fake Couple is more than just a contract marriage—it’s a delightful exploration of love, family, and acceptance.
