A Clichéd Romance Drama
Adapted from the novel “Bie Dui Wo Dong Xin” by Qiao Yao, “Everyone Loves Me” is a Chinese romantic comedy that revolves around Yue Qian Ling, a girl secretly crushing on the popular university student, Gu Xun.
The drama kicks off with Yue Qian Ling’s chance encounter with Gu Xun on the day she decides to quit her job. Fate seems to be on her side as she crosses paths with the newly hired Gu Xun. Determined to win his heart, Yue Qian Ling faces rejection in front of the entire college due to an unfortunate accident. But there’s a twist: Gu Xun’s online crush turns out to be none other than Yue Qian Ling herself. As the truth unfolds, Gu Xun embarks on a passionate, albeit comedic, journey to pursue his love.
Initially promising, “Everyone Loves Me” takes a nosedive as the episodes progress. Here’s why:
- Romantic Delay: In 2024, a romance drama shouldn’t withhold the couple’s union until the final moments. Unfortunately, this drama does just that. There’s no compelling reason for the prolonged buildup—no exes, no external obstacles. China took a step backward in this regard.
- Immature Protagonist: Yue Qian Ling’s refusal to listen to Gu Xun’s explanations becomes tiresome. Yes, she was hurt by his initial rejection, but the prolonged immaturity dampens the plot. Gu Xun tries everything to apologize, yet their reconciliation drags on unnecessarily.
- Work Overload: Just when we think they’ve moved past their issues, the drama shifts focus to their work lives. An unnecessary love interest for Yue Qian Ling further complicates matters.
Despite these flaws, the drama boasts stellar performances from its talented cast. Lin Yi, in particular, shines as Gu Xun. The charm reminiscent of “Love Scenery” occasionally surfaces, but it’s not enough to salvage the overall experience.
In episode 19, the protagonists finally start dating. Now, let’s hope they make up for lost time and deliver the romance we’ve been waiting for.
In summary, “Everyone Loves Me” starts strong but falters due to unnecessary delays and immature character choices. While it has its moments, it fails to capitalize on its potential as a romance drama.
