In Echo, a female hardcore detective named Ran Dongdong investigates the mysterious death of Xia Bingqing, a young woman with secrets. As the list of suspects grows, Dongdong unravels a web of lies, inconsistencies, and hidden motives. The drama delves into the complexities of love, marriage, and fidelity, blurring the lines between work and personal life.

What Works:

  • Acting and Characters: Both Song Jia and Wang Yang deliver mesmerizing performances as flawed, complex, and egotistical characters. There are no heroes here—just a toxic couple navigating their twisted relationship.
  • Psychological Intrigue: The way Dongdong uncovers the truth by dissecting unreliable testimonies keeps viewers engaged. The suspense plot starts strong.
  • Atmosphere and CinematographyEcho is stylishly made, with a cinematic quality that draws you in.

What Falls Short:

  • Suspense Plot: Unfortunately, the suspense plot loses steam after episode 10. It devolves into a procedural with too many plot holes and a weak motive for the murderer.
  • Relationship Exploration: The drama unexpectedly delves deep into the dark corners of marriage between two unlikable characters. The parallel plotlines remain unresolved.
  • Lack of Empathy: Even the victim lacks empathy, and most characters are terrible people.

Verdict: Echo is a mixed bag. While it starts strong and offers intriguing psychological elements, it ultimately disappoints with unresolved plotlines and unlikable characters. If you enjoy difficult relationship stories, it might still appeal to you.
