A Refreshing High School Drama
As an avid C-drama viewer, I’ve never felt compelled to write a review—until I watched Don’t Leave After School (2021). This gem of a drama defies the typical high school romance tropes, offering a refreshing take on the lives of students who didn’t make the cut for university entrance exams.
Story (10/10): The plot revolves around a group of high school students who, due to various reasons, couldn’t pass their college entrance exams. Instead, they find themselves repeating a year of high school together. The show realistically portrays the pressures and struggles of studying to secure a spot in a good university. But it’s not all doom and gloom—the drama also highlights the unwavering support these students receive from their peers, families, and teachers. As a university student myself, I found the story relatable and heartwarming.
Characters (10/10): The chemistry among the characters, especially the leads, is palpable. The drama skillfully dedicates episodes to side characters, seamlessly weaving their stories into the narrative. Mental health, bullying, family issues, and diverse passions all find representation. Each character has a unique backstory, making them more than just placeholders in the plot.
Production (10/10): The show’s unique style sets it apart. Each episode begins differently, with varying montages and comedy scenes. The ending credits feature real-life high school students sharing their thoughts—a thoughtful touch that adds depth. The director and writers clearly put effort into making this drama meaningful.
Overall (10/10): I didn’t skip a single minute of the 24 episodes. The romance takes a backseat, but it’s still cute. If you’re tired of formulaic high school dramas, give Don’t Leave After School a chance. It’s a rare gem that captures the essence of student life and leaves a lasting impression.
Note: The drama aired on Youku from June 11 to June 24, 2021, and runs for approximately 32 minutes per episode.
