Editor's Review
Delicacies Destiny, a delightful Chinese drama released in 2022, blends food, history, and romance into a heartwarming tale. With 16 episodes and an additional alternate ending, this series takes viewers on a flavorful journey through the imperial kitchen.
Plot Summary: The story revolves around Ling Xiao Xiao, a talented young chef determined to become the world’s best imperial chef. Her dream takes flight when she catches the attention of Prince Zhu Shou Kui, who employs her in the delicacy room. But this drama isn’t just about cooking; it’s a charming exploration of relationships, ambition, and self-discovery.
What Works:
- Cooking Scenes: Despite modest production values, Delicacies Destiny shines during its cooking sequences. The budget is wisely invested in showcasing mouthwatering dishes.
- Unconventional Royalty: Unlike typical historical rom-coms, this drama breaks free from rigid palace rules. The royals interact casually with their servants, and the Queen surprises by prioritizing her son’s happiness over tradition.
- Positive Body Image: The show subtly emphasizes positive body image, a refreshing departure from the norm.
- Endearing Romance: The slow-burn romance between Ling Xiao Xiao and Crown Prince Zhu Shou Kui is sincere and dorky. Their emotional immaturity leads to funny and endearing moments.
What Falls Short:
- The Ending: Episodes 1 to 15 are hilarious and quirky, but the open ending left me dissatisfied. It dimmed my anticipation for a potential season 2 and left me angry at the female lead. However, an alternate ending provides better closure.
- Budget Constraints: The nondescript sets and forgettable costumes occasionally distract from the overall charm.
Character Highlights:
- Zhu Shou Kui (Crown Prince): Initially spoiled and entitled, he matures throughout the drama. His compassion and growth make him lovable.
- Ling Xiao Xiao (Imperial Chef): Clueless about love, she gradually realizes her feelings for the prince. Actress He Rui Xian portrays her with grace.
In summary, Delicacies Destiny serves up a delightful blend of humor, romance, and culinary magic. While it may not have the big-budget appeal of some other dramas, its heartwarming story and endearing characters make it a worthwhile watch for foodies and romantics alike.
