Dating: What’s It Like To Be In Love? is a delightful Japanese drama that defies conventions and delivers a heartwarming tale of unexpected connections. Directed by Hideki Takeuchi and Junichi Ishikawa, this 10-episode series introduces us to Yoriko, an unemotional economist, and Takumi, a slacker who failed to launch.

The Characters: Yoriko, portrayed by Anne Watanabe, lives by efficiency and schedules. She’s fascinated by numbers, eats specific foods on designated days, and insists on everything being in its right place. Takumi (Hiroki Hasegawa), on the other hand, is introverted, living off his mother, and spends his days reading and watching movies. His room is a chaotic mess of books and videos.

The First Date: When Yoriko and Takumi meet, their differences are immediately apparent. Yoriko’s formal emails clash with Takumi’s hesitancy. She meticulously checks her scooter before driving super-slowly, while he shows up in mismatched clothes and a fedora, peeking around bushes. Their awkwardness is endearing, and we can’t help but root for them.

The Unconventional Match: Yoriko chooses Takumi because his birth date, height, and weight are prime numbers. Their interactions are both hilarious and heartwarming. They hike together, and Yoriko’s literal interpretation of everything adds to the charm. When Takumi runs away during their walk, we’re left wondering if this odd couple has any chance at love.

Friendship and Advice: As Yoriko tries dating Washio and Takumi dates Kaori, they keep calling each other for advice. We learn about Takumi’s past, which led him to drop out of life. Surprisingly, it’s Yoriko who offers insights. Their friendship blossoms, and we witness the gradual transformation of two seemingly incompatible souls.

What Makes It Stand Out:

  • Originality: The show avoids clichés, presenting a fresh take on romance.
  • Character Depth: Yoriko and Takumi’s quirks make them relatable and endearing.
  • Subtle Humor: The humor arises from their contrasting personalities and literal interpretations.
  • Heartfelt Moments: Beneath the comedy lies genuine emotion, making us care about their journey.

In summary, Dating: What’s It Like To Be In Love? is a delightful blend of comedy, romance, and unexpected connections. It’s a reminder that sometimes love finds us in the most unconventional ways.
