A Fantasy Drama with Flaws
“Dance of the Sky Empire” is a fantasy drama that takes viewers on a journey through a mystical world filled with magic, romance, and political intrigue. While it has its moments, the drama falls short in certain aspects.
1. Story: A Promising Start with Pacing Issues
The drama begins with a promising premise—a fantasy academy where students learn to harness their magical abilities. The initial episodes are engaging, with witty dialogues and humorous moments. However, around Episode 12 or 13, the pacing becomes problematic. The story progresses too slowly at times, only to rush through crucial scenes later. The focus on secondary characters and love triangles detracts from the main plot, leaving viewers wanting more development for the central storyline.
2. Acting: Xu Kai Shines, but Others Hold Their Ground
Xu Kai, playing the male lead, impresses with his performance. His charisma and cheesy charm carry the drama. Wu Jiayi, criticized by some, delivers a decent performance as the female lead. The chemistry between the two leads adds depth to their relationship.
3. CGI Effects and Plot Holes
The CGI effects are average, which is forgivable considering the genre. However, several plot holes stand out:
- Su Youlian’s Lack of Surprise: Su Youlian’s reaction to Li Xuan’s identity remains unconvincing. Why doesn’t she show more emotion?
- Rope vs. Wings: Su Youlian inexplicably uses a rope to descend a mountain despite having wings. Poor logic indeed.
- Inconsistent Knowledge: Li Xuan’s friends seem to know the true perpetrator behind a murder, but their reactions are inconsistent.
Overall Verdict: Average with Missed Potential
“Dance of the Sky Empire” could have been better. Despite its flaws, it manages to entertain, thanks to Xu Kai’s strong presence. The breathtaking scenery and magical elements add to its appeal. However, missed opportunities and rushed storytelling prevent it from reaching its full potential. If you’re a fan of fantasy dramas, it’s worth a watch, but don’t expect perfection.
