A Surprisingly Engaging Korean Cop Drama
“Crime Squad” was my first foray into Korean cop dramas, and I returned pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this show. While it does lean on some familiar character archetypes, the writers managed to flesh out these characters beyond their stereotypes, making them relatable and endearing.
The drama revolves around a group of detectives in the Seoul Gangnam Police Homicide Division, solving real-life cases. At the forefront of the team are two contrasting figures: the hotheaded detective Park Se Hyuk and the cold, commanding police chief, Jung Il Do. Their dynamic is intense, fueled by Se Hyuk’s impulsive methods and Il Do’s strict adherence to the rulebook. Their shared painful past adds emotional depth to their interactions, especially since Il Do was involved in the case concerning Se Hyuk’s daughter’s death.
The cast deserves applause, with Song Ji Hyo standing out. Her portrayal of the plucky reporter Jo Min Joo injects life into the show. The chemistry between the characters feels genuine, and their growth throughout the series keeps viewers engaged.
The drama follows a pattern where each case takes about two episodes to solve. These cases delve into the underbelly of life in Seoul, providing interesting insights. However, the pacing could have been better. The underlying storyline involving problems within the Seoul police department deserved more attention. Unfortunately, it felt rushed in the final episodes, leaving us craving more development.
Pros:
- Character Depth: Despite clichés, the characters evolve beyond their archetypes.
- Acting: Song Ji Hyo shines, delivering memorable moments.
- Real-Life Cases: Each case offers intriguing glimpses into Seoul’s darker side.
Cons:
- Pacing: The underlying storyline could have been teased out more gradually.
- Story Arc: The resolution felt abrupt, leaving some loose ends.
In summary, “Crime Squad” is a solid Korean cop drama that balances character-driven moments with intriguing cases. If you’re a fan of crime-solving shows with heart, give this one a watch. It won’t disappoint.
