A Thrilling Tale of Insider Trading and Unlikely Heroes

Introduction: “Cleaning Up,” a Korean adaptation of the 2019 British TV show, brings to life a captivating story of three cleaning ladies who stumble upon a secret that could change their lives forever. Directed by Yoon Seung Sik and written by Choi Kyung Mi, this drama aired on JTBC. Let’s delve into the intriguing world of “Cleaning Up.”

Plot Overview: The heart of the story revolves around Eo Young Mi (portrayed by Yeom Jung Ah), a single mother working as a cleaning lady at a brokerage company. Struggling to make ends meet, Young Mi discovers a possible case of insider trading within the company. In a clandestine alliance with her colleague An In Kyung (played by Jeon So Min), Young Mi embarks on a mission to gather crucial information. Their goal? To invest wisely and secure their financial futures.

As the stakes rise, they are joined by Maeng Soo Ja (Kim Jae Hwa), who endures a toxic family life. Together, they uncover a web of deceit that leads them to an influential figure known as “the captain.” Along the way, they encounter Lee Young Shin (Lee Moo Saeng), a lawyer, and Geum Jan Di (Jang Shin Young), the Audit team chief. As their lives intertwine, they find themselves in a precarious situation that could either save or ruin them.

Review: “Cleaning Up” successfully captures the tension and suspense of its British predecessor. The plot development is well-paced, gradually building up seriousness as the ladies delve deeper into their investigation. The more they uncover, the more thrilling and entertaining the drama becomes.

The cast delivers commendable performances. Yeom Jung Ah portrays Young Mi with vulnerability and determination, while Jeon So Min adds depth to An In Kyung’s character. Kim Jae Hwa’s portrayal of Maeng Soo Ja resonates with viewers, highlighting the struggles of a woman trapped in a difficult family situation.

What Works:

  • Character Dynamics: The chemistry among the three cleaning ladies is palpable. Their camaraderie and determination create a strong emotional core for the series.
  • Intriguing Premise: The concept of ordinary women stumbling upon insider trading secrets adds an unexpected twist to the drama.
  • Na In Woo’s Charm: Lee Do Yeong, played by Na In Woo, steals hearts with his endearing presence.

Areas for Improvement:

  • Pacing: While the gradual buildup works well, some episodes could benefit from tighter editing.
  • Character Backstories: A deeper exploration of each character’s past could enhance viewer engagement.

Conclusion: “Cleaning Up” is a decent remake that keeps viewers hooked with its suspenseful plot and relatable characters. Whether you’re a fan of financial thrillers or simply enjoy stories of unlikely heroes, this drama is worth a watch.

In summary, “Cleaning Up” offers a thrilling ride through the world of finance, friendship, and unexpected alliances. As the ladies navigate treacherous waters, they prove that sometimes the most unlikely heroes emerge from the shadows.
