Editor's Review
A Dark and Thrilling Bodice Ripper Romance
In the realm of love and hate, there exists a thin line—one that the mini drama “Circle of Love” treads upon with audacity. Reminiscent of its predecessors, Maid’s Revenge and Bride’s Revenge, this drama is a rollercoaster ride through toxic passion and forbidden desire.
Plot Summary: Determined to avenge her family, Gu Meng launches an attack on her former fiancé, the formidable warlord Xiao Hongye. However, her feeble attempt fails, and she finds herself captured and conscripted as a maid in his household. Conveniently suffering from memory loss, Gu Meng repeatedly falls in love with her nemesis, even as he domineeringly uses and abuses her. The stage is set for a star-crossed lovers’ dance—one that blurs the boundaries between love and hate.
What Works:
- Smart Protagonist: Gu Meng is no damsel in distress. She matches wits with Hongye, and their ability to harm each other is tit for tat.
- Sizzling Chemistry: The actors ignite the screen with their intense, sensuous chemistry. Li Jiulin’s portrayal of Hongye—controlling, possessive, passionate, and cruel—leaves viewers both giggling and cringing.
- Twists and Turns: The well-designed plot keeps viewers engaged, with unexpected twists that add depth to the story.
What to Be Wary Of:
- Toxic Alpha Male: Hongye embodies the worst red flags—an alpha male with abusive tendencies. Viewer discretion is advised.
- Outdated Gender Norms: The drama pushes boundaries, so it’s essential to approach it with an open mind.
Verdict: Circle of Love is a classic dark romance, akin to a bodice ripper novel. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but Li Jiulin’s dark, complex allure and Gu Meng’s resilience make it a guilty pleasure. The ending may be mean-spirited, but it’s ultimately satisfying. Enjoy vicariously, preferably with air conditioning and a glass of wine.
Rating: 8.0/10.0
Remember, this drama isn’t a blueprint for real-life relationships, but it’s a captivating escape into forbidden passion.
