Synopsis
During the Ming Dynasty, strange goings-on at a house of ill repute bring together three very different young people: the upstanding and ever-curious Duan Jin (Chen Ye Lin), Duan Rong (Yu Yue), his sister, and a justice-loving martial arts expert who often has to dress as a man in order to ply her trade unhindered by social convention, and a budding young detective named Xu He Qiao (Leon Li). After a powerful man stumbles into the house of ill repute, steaming drunk, something mysterious happens, and the man is found dead in his room. Suspicion falls upon one of the male protagonists after he discovers the body, and the authorities want him arrested. But the trio soon starts to suspect that this is quite the open-and-shut case it first seems to be.
After eventually getting to the bottom of this case, the three brilliant young minds decide to pool their talents and solve greater mysteries. As they continue to do so, they start to discover evidence suggesting the cases they look into may be linked to a larger and more sinister conspiracy than first thought, possibly involving supernatural elements…

Editor's Review
A Supernatural Thriller with Historical Intrigue
“Chong Ming Wei,” set during the Ming Dynasty, delves into a world where meteorites grant supernatural abilities to select individuals known as the “Abnormalities.” These gifted individuals possess powers that range from levitation to hearing the last sounds of the deceased. Against this backdrop, a special force called “Chong Ming Wei” emerges to deal with these extraordinary beings.
The drama introduces us to three young heroes, each compelled by different motivations. Xu He Qiao, a humble pleasure house waiter, is recruited by personal recommendation from the King. Duan Rong, a martial arts heroine, balances cuteness with seriousness. Duan Jin, a coroner, immerses himself in his life’s work. Together, they must confront a series of supernatural occurrences entangled in a vast conspiracy.
What Works:
- Intriguing Cases and Quick Resolutions: The drama presents multiple cases, each solved swiftly. However, every case is tied to a larger mystery surrounding the male lead (ML). The episodic structure keeps viewers engaged, wondering how each puzzle piece fits into the grander narrative.
- Supernatural Powers and Their Impact: The exploration of various superpowers—such as the dark clap of thunder, levitation, and the ability to hear the last moments of the deceased—adds depth to the story. These powers are both fascinating and eerie, contributing to the drama’s suspense.
- Historical Setting and Ming Dynasty Intrigue: Against the backdrop of the Ming Dynasty, “Chong Ming Wei” weaves historical elements seamlessly. The clash between tradition and supernatural forces creates a unique atmosphere.
What Could Be Improved:
- Chemistry Between Leads: While the acting is competent, the chemistry between the male lead and the female lead lacks intensity. Fortunately, the focus isn’t primarily on romance, allowing the plot to take center stage.
- Character Development: Although the heroes have distinct backgrounds, deeper character development would enhance our emotional investment in their journeys.
Final Thoughts:
“Chong Ming Wei” combines historical intrigue, supernatural elements, and suspenseful investigations. While it doesn’t break new ground, it offers an enjoyable viewing experience. If you’re a fan of thrillers set in historical contexts, this drama is worth a watch.
