A Whodunit Drama with a Twist
CHIP-IN, a Korean drama that aired in 2020, manages to pack intrigue, family secrets, and unexpected twists into just eight episodes. While some viewers might find this short length insufficient for a whodunit setup, the show’s creators successfully deliver an acceptable outcome.
Plot and Characters
The drama revolves around a terminally ill painter, Inho, who possesses a billion-won property. His mysterious death within the confines of his own home sets the stage for a gripping narrative. Was it a natural death due to his failing health, or did his family’s greed play a role? The central question isn’t merely “who” but “why.”
The Mystery Unfolds
As viewers, we’re drawn into the puzzle. Each family member starts off distant and sometimes antagonistic, but their dynamics shift as events unfold. The toxic family bonds begin to fray, and the death of the most powerful family member forces them to confront their shared past. The suspense keeps us guessing, and the unfolding backstory of each character adds depth.
Character Development
Initially, the cast seems to embody stereotypical suspects, lacking distinct personalities. However, as we learn about their motives and backgrounds, we sympathize with their struggles. Bit Na’s mother, portrayed by a talented actress, stands out. Despite the limited scope to showcase “real” emotions, the cast does a commendable job.
Not Just “Who,” But “Why”
CHIP-IN takes an unexpected turn. Instead of fixating on the killer’s identity, it delves into the motivations behind the crime. Why would someone feel compelled to take such drastic action? This shift in focus adds depth to the drama, elevating it beyond a mere murder mystery.
The Verdict
In summary, CHIP-IN is a decent drama that balances suspense, character development, and emotional moments. While it occasionally drags in the middle, the overall experience is worth it. The eight episodes provide enough time to explore the characters and their tangled relationships. As the layers peel away, we realize that the true mystery lies not in the act itself but in the human psyche.
