A Melodrama Outdoing Police Procedural
Chang Zheng, the vice captain of the criminal police brigade, is embroiled in a relentless pursuit. His target? The notorious Zhao family cartel, a powerful syndicate founded on mining. Set against the backdrop of this gripping part melodrama, part police procedural, the drama unfolds with determination, corruption, and a web of secrets.
Plot Summary: Chang Zheng (Johnny Huang) has dedicated his life to seeking justice and dismantling the Zhao machinery’s corrupt influence on the city. His father, also a cop, died under suspicious circumstances while investigating the Zhao family. Now, Chang Zheng faces a formidable adversary—the patriarch, Zhao Xiaosheng, and his three sons. Each brother vies for control of Zhao Enterprises Inc., and their power struggles mirror echoes of The Brothers Karamazov. The second son, Zhao Pengcheng, refuses to be part of the family business and pays the ultimate price for his defiance.
Character Dynamics: Among the brothers, Tony Yang’s Zhao Pengchao stands out. Cunning and patient, he plays the long game even while in Australia. His goal? To reform the company, give it a facelift, and transfer assets abroad at the first sign of trouble. Meanwhile, others in Changwu tread cautiously, aware that the city’s richest family will stop at nothing for real money—even betraying their closest allies.
Review: “Chasing the Undercurrent” keeps viewers on the edge from the first episode to the last. The leads deliver stellar performances, but it’s the ensemble cast that shines. The story weaves originality, intrigue, and unexpected twists. Tony Yang’s portrayal of Zhao Pengchao is a masterclass in cunning manipulation. His battle of wits with both brothers and the police keeps us guessing.
The drama’s moralizing themes, indoctrination, and melodrama provide nuggets of an interesting story. While some moments may feel familiar, the execution remains engaging. The Zhao family’s grip on power, Chang Zheng’s unwavering pursuit, and Zhao Pengchao’s calculated moves create a compelling narrative.
In summary, “Chasing the Undercurrent” balances suspense, family dynamics, and moral dilemmas. It’s a gripping watch that leaves a lasting impression.
