Editor's Review
A Fanfic-Turned-K-Drama Adventure
“Boss-dol Mart” is a quirky K-drama that blends the world of washed-up idols with the challenges of running a mart. While it doesn’t reach the heights of some other dramas, it manages to deliver an entertaining watch with a dash of mystery.
Plot Summary
The Thunder Boys, a group of K-pop heartthrobs, find themselves in a tight spot when their talent agency faces financial troubles. Desperate for a solution, they decide to take over a struggling mart. The premise is intriguing: estranged idols running a business together. However, the execution leaves room for improvement.
Acting and Characterization
Lee Sin Young, as the supposed “main” lead, disappoints with his emotional range—resembling a plank of wood for most of the show. The villain’s motivations are muddled by unnecessary twists, diluting the impact of his scheming. And what was the point of Gina, the girl idol? Her relationship drama adds nothing to the story.
Missed Opportunities
The drama hints at a love triangle between Ho Rang, Ye Rim, and Tae Ho, but it remains underdeveloped. A better writer could have capitalized on the premise—estranged idols navigating the challenges of running a mart. Imagine if Ye Rim had been a super fan of the Thunder Boys, adding depth and excitement to the plot.
Pacing and Phasing
The drama’s pacing feels sluggish, especially for a short 10-episode series. The acting ranges from dull to cringy, leaving viewers wanting more. Minseok and Hyungwon have potential, but the direction fails to bring out their best. Shinyoung’s acting takes a nosedive, affecting the overall experience.
Verdict
“Boss-dol Mart” is like a fanfic adapted into a K-drama. Approach it with moderate expectations, and you’ll find it an okay watch. Despite its flaws, the premise keeps you curious, and the glimpses of mystery add intrigue. If only the execution matched the potential, this could have been a delightful show.
In conclusion, “Boss-dol Mart” offers a unique blend of idol drama and business challenges. While it falls short in some areas, it’s worth a watch for fans of unconventional K-dramas.
