In their college days, campus sweethearts Jung Hyun Sung and Han Sung Ok fell madly in love with each other. They couldn’t imagine spending a day apart and dreamed of launching successful careers that would complement their forever love. Seven years later, reality has bitten hard. The infamous “seven-year itch” has set in, and they find themselves bored with each other. Where passion once thrived, now resides only indifference and boredom. As their seventh anniversary approaches, they wonder if the spark can return to save their relationship.

“Between Him and Her” is adapted from the webtoon “A Man and a Woman” by Hyeo No. The drama explores the complexities of long-term relationships, the challenges of sustaining love, and the harsh realities of growing apart. Here are my thoughts on this romantic drama:

  1. Character Dynamics: The chemistry between the leads, portrayed by Lee Dong Hae (Jung Hyun Sung) and Lee Seol (Han Sung Ok), is palpable. Their initial passion and subsequent disillusionment are portrayed convincingly. However, the character development could have been more nuanced.
  2. Themes: The drama delves into themes like career aspirationsrelationship monotony, and personal growth. It highlights how love evolves over time and how external pressures impact a couple’s connection.
  3. Plot Pacing: While the premise is intriguing, the pacing feels uneven. Some episodes drag, and the central conflict could have been explored more deeply. The side couples add freshness to the narrative, but the leads’ story lacks progression.
  4. Acting: Lee Dong Hae and Lee Seol deliver commendable performances. Lee Dong Hae captures Jung Hyun Sung’s vulnerability, while Lee Seol portrays Han Sung Ok’s emotional turmoil effectively. The supporting cast also shines, especially Baek Soo Hee as Yoon Yoo Joo.
  5. Webtoon Adaptation: Fans of the original webtoon may notice significant deviations. Unfortunately, some changes weaken the impact of the story. The show could have stayed truer to the source material.
  6. Music: The soundtrack complements the emotional moments, but it doesn’t stand out. A more memorable score could have enhanced the viewing experience.

In conclusion, “Between Him and Her” offers glimpses of a relatable relationship struggle, but it falls short of its potential. If you enjoy dramas exploring love’s complexities and personal growth, give it a watch. However, manage your expectations, as it doesn’t fully deliver on its promising premise.
