A Toxic Love Story with Missed Potential
“BetCin” was one of my most anticipated dramas of 2021. From the trailer, it promised a sapphic love story with intrigue. Unfortunately, my expectations were shattered.
Plot Summary:
The story revolves around Beth and Cindy, an online couple with thousands of followers. To their fans, the Umamis, they appear perfect. But behind the scenes, their relationship is a facade. One cheats, while the other exploits their connection for likes and subscribers. When Beth demands a breakup to move in with her secret lover, Cindy reluctantly agrees. Fate intervenes, offering them a chance to win millions in a relationship goals contest—if they can convincingly pretend to be head-over-heels in love for ten days.
Toxicity and Missed Opportunities:
This drama showcases one of the most toxic relationships I’ve seen. Cindy is manipulative, showing little remorse for her actions. Beth consistently makes poor decisions. There’s not a single moment where I wished they’d end up together. Instead, I wanted them on opposite sides of the Earth, never to interact again.
The Disappointing Ending:
In the penultimate episode, there’s a glimmer of hope. Maybe they’ll do the right thing. But the ending crushes any optimism. It feels unsatisfying and abrupt, leaving me with a sense of dread. All the lessons learned are suddenly un-learned. The drama lacks a clear point.
Failed Distractions:
The weak plot and irritating characters attempt to distract us with occasional humor. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. I was too busy seething with rage to notice the music.
Final Thoughts:
- Acting/Cast: 7.0
- Music: 6.0
- Rewatch Value: 1.0 (MDL doesn’t allow lower ratings)
I wouldn’t touch “BetCin” again with a ten-foot pole. It had huge potential but suffered from poor execution and a disappointing ending. If you’re seeking a sapphic love story, look elsewhere.
