A Refreshing and Thoughtful Romantic Drama
“Because This Is My First Life” is a gem in the world of romantic comedies. While it maintains the lightheartedness typical of the genre, it also delves into deeper themes, making it a standout K-drama.
Plot and Themes: The show weaves together three seemingly simple plotlines: cohabitation/contract marriage, the dynamics of a rich man and a poor woman, and the complexities of a long-term relationship. What sets it apart is how skillfully it handles these themes. The writing is deliberate, avoiding clichés and instead offering a fresh perspective. The drama tackles issues like traditional gender roles, sexual harassment in the workplace, and the meaning of marriage. It does so thoughtfully and eloquently, making it more than just a typical romance.
Characters: The characters are the heart of this drama. Ji Ho and Se Hee, the main couple, are a joy to watch. Their chemistry is palpable, and their interactions feel genuine. Ji Ho, in particular, stands out as an intelligent and relatable lead. But it’s not just the main couple—the entire ensemble is well-crafted. Each character serves a purpose, contributing to the texture and depth of the story. No one is there just to fill screen time; they all have clear motivations and coherent thoughts.
Why You Should Watch:
- Progressive Themes: “Because This Is My First Life” challenges traditional norms. It portrays strong, independent women and addresses issues that aren’t commonly explored in Korean dramas. The drama’s exploration of gender roles and workplace dynamics is both refreshing and relevant.
- Layered Storytelling: Despite its seemingly straightforward premise, the drama surprises with its depth. It’s not just about romance; it’s about life, choices, and personal growth. The layers unfold gradually, leaving a lasting impact.
- Timeless Appeal: Whether you’re young or older, this drama resonates. As you experience life’s dilemmas, you’ll appreciate the characters’ struggles and growth. It’s a show that ages well, and I’m already itching to rewatch it.
Final Verdict: “Because This Is My First Life” earns a solid 10/10 from me. It’s a drama that transcends the genre, leaving viewers with a sense of fulfillment. So, if you’re looking for a heartfelt romance with substance, dive into this delightful series.
