Editor's Review
A Tale of Immortals and Destiny
Despite a somewhat tired premise, “Beauty of Resilience” surprises with its plot design. The Egret Academy’s challenge arc, reminiscent of the Triwizard competition in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” provides an enjoyable twist. Additionally, the mysterious Zihua Book Pavilion and its enigmatic master add intrigue. Notably, the Heavenly Empress serves as more than mere decoration—she wields a crucial role as the mistress of time. The concept of Hua Rong introduces freshness and mystery.
Characterization and Acting
Unfortunately, the drama falters in character development. Indifferent character blueprints and mis-cast roles hinder the overall experience. Guo Junchen’s portrayal of multiple roles is technically flawless, but the script fails to fully utilize his talent. Yan Yue, the cardboard xianxia archetype, only briefly shines as the morally conflicted Chen Yan. Ju Jingyi, while nuanced, delivers her usual indistinguishable portrayal. Her comedic timing remains untapped due to the humorless script.
Supporting Cast and Relationships
Mu Nan stands out as the engaging and empathetic character, but he is paired with a tedious and mis-cast role. The supporting characters lack depth, chemistry, and rapport. Forced interactions and unconvincing relationships hinder emotional investment. Identity thefts abound, leaving even the lead actors struggling to embody their swapped roles convincingly.
Visuals and CGI Effects
The drama compensates with stunning costumes and impressive CGI effects. The world-building is visually captivating, drawing viewers into the mystical realms. Despite occasional missteps, the visual spectacle remains a highlight.
Conclusion
“Beauty of Resilience” offers glimpses of brilliance within its flawed execution. While it doesn’t fully capitalize on its innovative ideas, it manages to entertain. If you can overlook the character inconsistencies and appreciate the visual grandeur, this drama is worth a watch.
