A Hidden Gem of 2019
Be Melodramatic has the chops to compete for the title of best drama of 2019. Airing on cable network JTBC, this drama initially went unnoticed, and it did not help itself with a rough start. However, as the show quickly found its footing, it delivered a drama that perfectly encapsulates the essence of a 2010s romcom.
Story: A Slice of Life with a Twist
The story initially comes off as a bit lukewarm and light on plot. One might even think it deserves the “slice of life” tag. However, Be Melodramatic surprises viewers by engaging them with an intertwining narrative. It cleverly weaves the drama within the drama, creating a meta experience that keeps you guessing. Admittedly, the first three episodes are shaky, but by the fourth episode, the different pieces of the story start falling into place. The drama revolves around three female leads, each dealing with common quarter-life problems. As viewers get to know these characters, they become more endearing, and their struggles resonate.
Meta Comedy and Real Characters
What sets Be Melodramatic apart is its thick layer of meta comedy. Experienced K-drama watchers will find themselves rolling in laughter. The show’s premise revolves around the leads striving to produce a drama with double-digit ratings, yet it struggles to surpass the 2% mark. Perhaps there’s a general fatigue with the romcom genre, but this show deserves more love. Even if the plot synopsis doesn’t immediately interest you, the meta comedy will have you goofy-smiling through all 16 episodes.
Acting: A Pleasant Surprise
The acting in Be Melodramatic caught my attention from the start. The deadpan humor in the trailers and actor Ahn Jae Hong’s brand of comedy set the tone. The three female leads, despite having a relatively short drama resume, shine. Jeon Yeon Bin, who portrays Lee Eun-Jung, brings her character to life with depth and authenticity. The supporting cast also gets significant screen time, adding to the show’s charm. The writer’s ability to create lovable characters and the cast’s talent in portraying them contribute to the drama’s success.
In summary, Be Melodramatic is a hidden gem that deserves recognition. It’s a delightful blend of romance, comedy, and self-awareness. So, if you’re looking for a drama that defies conventions and leaves you smiling, give Be Melodramatic a chance. It might just become your favorite drama of 2019.
