“As You Wish: Story of Kunning Palace” is a captivating Chinese drama adaptation of the popular female harem web novel “Kun Ning” by Shi Jing. The drama takes an intriguing approach: readers voted on who the female protagonist ends up with. Set against a backdrop of intrigue, conceit, betrayal, revenge, and redemption, this dark tale weaves a complex web of emotions.

Plot and Characters:

Jiang Xuening, portrayed by Bai Lu, is an alluring yet resentful woman. Her selfish ambition drives her to become empress, leading to the downfall of the royal family and the ruin of her childhood sweetheart, Yan Lin, and the once-incorruptible Zhang Zhe. Desperate and full of regret, she bargains with the enigmatic Xie Wei for a chance at redemption. Reborn as her 18-year-old self, she vows to change her fate and save those she wronged. As she unravels hidden secrets and unexpected allies, she grapples with the idea of altering destiny.

Character Dynamics and Relationships:

The drama excels in portraying complex character dynamics. Bai Lu’s performance as Jiang Xuening captures her transformation from a wicked and self-indulgent beauty to a remorseful soul seeking redemption. However, the storytelling falls short in Zhang Zhe’s arc—the most pivotal love story. Their emotions, once powerful enough to push them toward mutual destruction, are somewhat diluted in their do-over relationship.

Music and Atmosphere:

The drama’s OSTs enhance the emotional depth. “Chosen One” by Forestella and “Knock Down The Giant” by Twlv evoke powerful feelings during crucial moments. The atmosphere is richly textured, immersing viewers in the intrigue of the Kunning Palace.

Conclusion:

“As You Wish: Story of Kunning Palace” delivers a compelling narrative, exploring the links between past, present, and future. While some character arcs could have been more fully developed, the drama remains a worthy watch. May the baddest man win, indeed!
