A Tale of Lies and Consequences

“Anna” is not your run-of-the-mill drama. It may not appear extremely intriguing or exciting at first glance, but it certainly offers insights into truth and reflections of reality. As you delve deeper into the story, you’ll find that it dissects characters and their psychology in a manner that might not always feel realistic but leaves you pondering the consequences of lies.

The drama follows Lee Yu Mi (portrayed by Bae Suzy), a woman entangled in a web of deception. Her life is built on lies—choices made out of bravery but leading her into an endless pit. The original novel, “Intimate Stranger,” serves as the foundation for this mini Korean web drama. Lee Joo Young takes charge of both screenwriting and direction, creating a compelling narrative that unfolds over six episodes.

What Works:

  1. Bae Suzy’s Performance: Bae Suzy once again proves her acting prowess. Despite a flat 2D script, she breathes life into Anna—a character with complex and often conflicting emotions. Through subtle nuances, Suzy transforms Anna into a 3D person, making her relatable and intriguing.
  2. Exploration of Deception: “Anna” delves into the art of deception. It reminds us that lies require commitment and often come at a cost. Anna’s choices, fueled by aspirations and fear, lead her down a treacherous path. The drama doesn’t shy away from portraying the consequences of her actions.
  3. Suspense and Intrigue: While the synopsis may not reveal much, the drama keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. As Anna’s secrets unravel, suspense builds, leaving us eager to uncover the next layer of deception.

Areas for Improvement:

  1. Pacing: The drama’s editing choices are puzzling. The last two episodes feel rushed, as if heavy editing was done to fit them into a shorter runtime. Unfortunately, this detracts from the overall experience.
  2. Character Depth: While Anna’s internal struggle is well-portrayed, some secondary characters lack depth. Further exploration of their motivations and emotions would enhance the storytelling.

In summary, “Anna” is a thought-provoking drama that challenges our perception of truth and the lengths we’ll go to maintain our illusions. It may not be perfect, but it leaves a lasting impression. If you appreciate psychological thrillers and character-driven narratives, give “Anna” a watch.
