A Speech-Driven Drama with Missed Potential
“And the Winner Is Love” is a Chinese television series based on the novel of the same name by Junzi Yize. Set against a backdrop of warring factions and forbidden love, the drama follows the journey of Chong Xue Zhi (CXZ), the young mistress of the Hall of Flames, and Shangguan Tou (SGT), the master of the Moon Valley. While the show boasts impressive visuals, it falls short in several critical aspects.
Plot/Story (3.0/10): The drama’s plot could have been captivating, but unfortunately, it suffers from an overemphasis on repetitive conversations. Most of the show revolves around characters talking rather than taking meaningful action. The solutions to problems are disappointingly straightforward, leaving little room for intrigue or mystery. Additionally, unnecessary deaths abound, with new characters introduced only to meet untimely fates within a few episodes.
Acting/Cast (7.5/10): Yukee Chen, who plays CXZ, lacks the presence expected of a main lead. Her acting is passable, but she fails to convey the transformation from a naive character to a strong female lead convincingly. Leo Luo, on the other hand, shines as SGT, but the overall ensemble cast prevents him from single-handedly carrying the drama. Chen’s portrayal could have benefited from more exploration of her character’s emotional range. Despite the limitations imposed by the script, Luo’s performance stands out.
Music (6.0/10): The music score is serviceable but doesn’t leave a lasting impression. It neither enhances nor detracts from the viewing experience.
Rewatch Value (2.0/10): Unfortunately, “And the Winner Is Love” lacks the depth and complexity needed for repeat viewings. The slow pacing and shallow tone make it unlikely that viewers would willingly revisit the drama.
In summary, “And the Winner Is Love” falls short of its potential. While the visuals and historical setting are commendable, the lack of a compelling plot and character development hinders its impact. If you’re seeking a drama with substance, this one may not be your best choice.
