A Clever Spoof on C-Dramas
When the lead actor is also the benefactor funding the entire shoot, and he’s hysterically changing the script to fulfill his dream of being a hero in various costumes, things are bound to get a little out of control. Welcome to the delightful chaos of An Actor’s Rhapsody.
The humble yet stubborn screenwriter finds herself powerless to resist the demands of the show’s investor, who insists on playing the male lead in every conceivable story. As a result, the plot becomes haywire, and character development takes a backseat. From palace fights and suspense to xianxia and time travel, this drama is a melting pot of costume dramas. But beneath it all lies an actor’s unrestrained pursuit for redemption and fulfillment of his dreams.
The drama’s premise is both absurd and brilliant. It cleverly spoofs the tropes we’ve come to expect from Chinese dramas. The starting scene sets the tone: a crew shooting a costume drama, but due to the female lead’s absence, they use a stand-in with a green face. The producer (who is also the male lead) yells “cut!” and thus begins our wild ride.
An Actor’s Rhapsody takes us through a whirlwind of familiar scenes. The screenwriter struggles to keep up as the male lead insists on changing the story. Nine female leads later, we witness a hot mess of all drama tropes. The best episodes are when the screenwriter finally gets more lines and tells the actor what to do (episodes 22-23).
Despite its short length, the acting surprises. All nine female leads are not only beautiful but also outshine some well-known actresses. The male lead’s transformation—from a white idol skin face to a brown assassin face—elicits laughter. His commitment to the absurdity of his roles is commendable.
The only downside? Rumor has it that two more stories (about six episodes) didn’t pass censorship. It’s a shame because I would love to watch more of this delightful spoof.
In summary, An Actor’s Rhapsody is a refreshing departure from the usual drama fare. It breaks the fourth wall, winks at the audience, and invites us to laugh along. If you’re tired of predictable plots and want a dose of hilarity, give this short drama a try.
