A Whirlwind Romance
“Ai Long Nhai” is a Thai boys’ love (BL) drama that follows the lives of two university students, Ai and Nhai. Set against the backdrop of a standard Thai university, the series explores themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery.
Synopsis
Ai, portrayed by Meen Nichakoon Khajornborirak, studied abroad until he was expelled for quarreling. His father, who is in a relationship with another man, forces him to return to Thailand. Back at the university where his father teaches, Ai meets Chen Nhai (played by Ping Krittanun Aunchananun), a Harley Davidson-riding classmate with an obsession for a yellow duck keychain. Ai falls in love at first sight, and their whirlwind romance begins.
What Worked:
- Love at First Sight Conversation: Unlike many BL dramas, Ai and Nhai actually have a conversation about their love at first sight. This refreshing approach adds depth to their connection.
- Representation: It’s heartening to see two queer actors, Arm and Porsch (who are a real-life couple), in a BL series. Their chemistry adds authenticity to the characters.
- Cute and Funny Moments: The series delivers several cute and funny moments, keeping viewers entertained.
- Handling Sensitive Scenes: The portrayal of Nhai’s dad stands out. Despite some challenging scenes, the show handles them well, emphasizing consent and aftercare.
Areas for Improvement:
- Character Depth: While Ai and Nhai are undeniably cute, their characters lack depth. Nhai’s flaws remain unexplored, and his reluctance feels unjustified.
- Side Couples: Multiple side couples are introduced but not adequately developed, leaving their stories incomplete.
- Cartoonish Villain: The antagonist lacks nuance and comes across as overly exaggerated.
- Pacing and Plot Threads: The finale feels rushed, with open plot threads. The series could have delved deeper into character arcs.
Overall Verdict:
“Ai Long Nhai” is a classic Thai university BL that won’t win awards but manages to entertain. While it lacks depth, the cute moments and chemistry between Ai and Nhai keep viewers engaged. If you’re looking for a light-hearted romance, this series fits the bill.
