Editor's Review
“A Romance of the Little Forest” is a delightful Chinese drama that blends romance, comedy, and heartwarming moments. While it may not be the pinnacle of romantic comedies, it certainly has its own unique charm.
The story revolves around Yu Meiren (played by Yu Shuxin), an internet beauty influencer who also happens to be a professor specializing in ornithology (the study of birds). Her bubbly personality, adorable antics, and witty dialogues make her an endearing character. Despite her seemingly naive demeanor, Yu Meiren is no pushover. She possesses both brains and courage, unafraid to express herself and take risks for what she believes in.
Enter Zhuang Yu (played by Zhang Binbin), a botanic professor with a cold exterior. However, beneath his serious facade lies a man who subtly expresses his emotions through micro-expressions. As Yu Meiren enters his life, Zhuang Yu gradually thaws, becoming more lively and even speaking romantic words that are both cheesy and endearing.
What sets this drama apart is the chemistry between the two leads. Their interactions are filled with sweetness, reassurances, and genuine care for each other. Zhuang Yu consistently reminds Yu Meiren of her worth, emphasizing that she is beautiful just the way she is. Their character development after meeting each other is heartwarming to witness.
But here’s the twist: the main couple isn’t actually the main couple. The drama also focuses on a second pair—a village girl falling for a CEO. Unfortunately, the second couple’s storyline drags on for too long, stealing screen time from the primary leads. While their scenes are classic and predictable, they detract from the main couple’s development.
Despite this flaw, “A Romance of the Little Forest” remains enjoyable. The chemistry between Yu Shuxin and Zhang Binbin is palpable, and their portrayal of Yu Meiren and Zhuang Yu is endearing. The drama’s OSTs add to its charm, enhancing emotional moments.
In summary, if you’re seeking a sweet romantic-comedy drama that will make you squeal with delight, give “A Romance of the Little Forest” a watch. Just be prepared for the second couple’s occasional intrusion into the main storyline!
