At twenty-eight, Junko Sakuraba’s greatest dream is to live and work in New York City. Unfortunately, working as an English language school teacher isn’t getting her any closer to her dreams. As disappointed as she is at being so far from making her greatest dream come true, Junko is even more disappointed in the fact that she’s soon turning twenty-nine and still has never had a boyfriend.

But fate has other plans for Junko. During a funeral service, she notices a handsome monk praying at the temple. Well aware that a funeral isn’t the best time to find a guy, Junko tries to ignore him. However, fate intervenes when she accidentally knocks a bowl of ash from the altar onto the monk’s head. Mortified, Junko convinces herself that she will never see him again.

But destiny has more surprises in store. Tricked into a matchmaking session by her family, Junko discovers that the other party is none other than the handsome monk, Takane Hoshikawa. Will this second meeting go better than the first, or have the two been doomed from the start?

5→9 From Five to Nine is a delightful romantic comedy drama adapted from the manga series of the same name by Miki Aihara. Directed by Shin Hirano, Hideyuki Aizawa, and Masaki Tanimura, the show combines humor, romance, and unexpected twists. The chemistry between the lead characters, Junko Sakuraba (played by Satomi Ishihara) and Takane Hoshikawa (played by Tomohisa Yamashita), keeps viewers engaged throughout the ten episodes.

The drama beautifully captures the complexities of love, dreams, and missed opportunities. Junko’s journey from disappointment to unexpected encounters adds depth to the storyline. The contrast between her practical life as an English teacher and the mystical world of the temple creates a unique backdrop for their romance.

The supporting cast, including Yuki Furukawa and Kei Tanaka, adds charm and humor to the mix. The chemistry between the characters is palpable, and viewers will find themselves rooting for Junko and Takane.

The cinematography captures the beauty of both urban Tokyo and the serene temple surroundings. Whether it’s the bustling streets or the quiet moments of reflection, the visuals enhance the emotional impact of the story.

5→9 From Five to Nine is a delightful escape into the world of romance, fate, and unexpected connections. If you’re looking for a heartwarming drama with a touch of humor, this series is a must-watch.
