A Formulaic Yet Action-Packed Thriller

Fierce Cop (烈探) is a straightforward action movie that follows the familiar premise of a desperate parent searching for a missing child. Directed by Chan Tan-Li and written by Nicholl Tang Nik-Kei, the film stars Richie Ren as Zhang Tu, a cop who discovers that his son, Xiaoje (Xia Tian), has been abducted by human traffickers. With the help of Chin Maung Su (Sebrina Chen), a nightclub employee, they embark on a cross-country journey to rescue Zhang’s missing son at any cost.

The movie’s plot may be formulaic, but Richie Ren’s committed performance as Zhang Tu elevates it. Ren convincingly portrays a martial artist, thanks to Kenji Tanigaki’s above-average action direction. Despite not being a martial artist himself, Ren’s physically demanding performance impresses, especially considering he was already 56 years old during filming. The film features plenty of hand-to-hand combat scenes, reminiscent of MMA fighting styles seen in movies like Flash Point (2007) starring Donnie Yen.

Clocking in at less than 90 minutes, Fierce Cop compensates for its cliché-ridden plot with intense action sequences. The elaborate knife fight between Richie Ren and Dang Shanpeng stands out as a highlight. Kenji Tanigaki’s involvement as the action director ensures well-choreographed fight scenes without the usual shaky-cam confusion. Chan Tan-Li, directing an action film for the first time, draws inspiration from directors like Wilson Yip, resulting in a cinematic experience despite the movie’s straight-to-streaming status.

While the film may not break new ground, it delivers what action fans crave: thrilling combat, a determined hero, and a race against time. Fierce Cop may not linger in memory, but it provides an entertaining ride for those seeking adrenaline-pumping fights and a dash of melodrama. As Zhang Tu fights to save his son, the movie reminds us that sometimes formulaic can still be fun.

In summary, Fierce Cop offers a familiar yet engaging experience, with Richie Ren’s performance and well-executed action sequences as its standout features. If you’re in the mood for a no-nonsense thriller, this film delivers the goods4.
