A Predictable Yet Enjoyable Martial Arts Drama

“Chivalrous” is a wuxia drama that weaves together martial arts, historical intrigue, and adventure. Set against the backdrop of ancient China, the story revolves around the lost Xuanwu Order, a powerful token passed down from the God of War. With the Xuanwu Order missing, the four great martial arts families find themselves at odds, engaging in both open and secret battles.

Plot Summary

Mo Xiao Hao, a descendant of the God of War, has secluded himself from the mundane world. However, fate intervenes when he meets Bai Yu Jiao. Together, they become embroiled in the feuds and disputes between the martial arts families. Their mission: to restore peace to the rivers and lakes. As they work to resolve conflicts, Mo Xiao Hao and Bai Yu Jiao also find solace in each other, eventually secluding themselves from the martial arts world.

Review

“Chivalrous” offers a mix of familiar tropes and engaging moments. Here’s what stood out:

  1. Predictability: The plot follows a well-trodden path, with elements of mystery, betrayal, and hidden agendas. While it doesn’t break new ground, it maintains a steady pace that keeps viewers interested.
  2. Character Chemistry: The chemistry between Mo Xiao Hao (played by Yan Xi) and Bai Yu Jiao (Zima Yunyi) is subtle but endearing. Their interactions add depth to the story, even if the dubbing occasionally falls flat.
  3. Visuals and Fights: The fight scenes are visually appealing, showcasing martial arts choreography. However, the explosions during battles feel reminiscent of 1980s war movies, which can be distracting.
  4. Xuanwu Order: The central mystery revolves around the Xuanwu Order, but its true value remains elusive. We never witness the promised riches associated with it, reducing its significance to a mere token of authority.
  5. Villainous Schemes: The real plotter behind the scenes is cleverly concealed, making use of character flaws and long-standing feuds. While predictable to the viewer, the characters struggle to uncover the truth.

Final Thoughts

“Chivalrous” won’t revolutionize the wuxia genre, but it’s a decent watch for those seeking an uncomplicated martial arts drama. Grab a beer, settle on the couch, and enjoy it as a way to unwind after a long day.
