Netflix debuted a new Korean drama called Parasyte: The Grey on Friday (5/4/2024). This series, based on a manga by Hitoshi Iwaki, follows the tale of parasites targeting human brains to take over as hosts, aiming to rise to power among humans.
Consisting of six episodes, the drama features renowned actors such as Jeon So Nee, Koo Kyo Hwan, and Lee Jung Hyun. After watching, it becomes evident that several characters have poignant backgrounds, whether from their past or present. Here, we’ll delve into who these characters are, but beware, spoilers ahead!
1. Jeong Su In
Jeong Su In (Jeon So Nee) endured a loveless childhood, suffering abuse from her father. At just 10 years old, unable to bear the mistreatment any longer, she reported him to the authorities. However, instead of support, she faced criticism for her actions. Later, rejected by her mother, who had remarried, Jeong Su In felt abandoned and unworthy of affection. Fortunately, she found solace in the care of police officer Kim Chul Min (Kwon Hae Hyo), who tragically meets his demise at the hands of a monster.
2. Seol Kang Woo
Seol Kang Woo (Koo Kyo Hwan) traveled to Seoul in search of employment, resorting to thuggery to make ends meet. Ordered to assassinate a gang leader, he fails, becoming a target himself. Returning home, he witnesses his brother’s transformation into a monster and the death of his younger sibling. Despite the horrors he endures, his brother’s humanity shines through as he sacrifices himself to protect Seol Kang Woo.
3. Choi Jun Kyung
Choi Jun Kyung (Lee Jung Hyun) leads the Gray police force, formed to combat parasites threatening human lives. Motivated by her own harrowing experience when her husband falls victim to a parasite, Choi Jun Kyung employs ruthless methods to neutralize these creatures. However, betrayal from within her ranks adds to her anguish, leading to tragic consequences.
4. Kim Chul Min
Kim Chul Min (Kwon Hae Hyo), a compassionate police detective, becomes a father figure to Jeong Su In. He staunchly defends her innocence when suspicions arise regarding her true nature. Tragically, he falls victim to a monster, leaving Jeong Su In devastated.
5. Kang Won Seok
Kang Won Seok (Kim In Kwon) emerges as the true antagonist, collaborating with parasites to preserve his own life. Feeling emasculated after his wife humiliates him publicly and hindered by his lack of career advancement, he resorts to treachery. However, his alliance proves fatal as he meets his demise at the hands of a monster.
